A friend just slept through my shower that she told me she was coming to. Two days later she returned my call/txt saying she was sorry she slept through it. I understand if you're tired, but let me know the night before next time. The next night she told me she won't be coming to my wedding. Granted it's on the east coast (expensive tickets) but ALL YEAR she said she was coming, and never sent in her reply cards (because "our generation doesn't RSVP" she said)- well to my wedding I THINK THEY SHOULD! And she said "That's why I put mine (her wedding invite; the wedding I helped a lot and did a lot for) online!"
She seemed very flippant and I feel hurt. I had to scramble to find another (professional) to do my hair and she was going to do my guestbook (I'll buy one that will take the place of her scrapbook she said she was going to make me). She's lost my trust because I feel like she led me on for a year saying she would stand by my side. My fiance was very disappointed too because he felt like I should have friends that I can count on. Now we will pay a professional to do my hair and it won't be as special because it's not my friend coming, the friend that has practiced (knows my hair) and everything. I'm so sad to lose that!
But you're right, you kinda have to "hound" people in this day and age until they are confronted and have to give you a straight answer. Almost all of my other wedding guests RSVP'd on time. Several friends from here told me they wouldn't be able to make it because of ticket prices and I totally got that.
I'll be happy who IS coming, and thankful, but sad to lose that one friend.

If I receive the invitation before the event is scheduled then I do respond. But, like you, I have so many social networks that I don't check them all every day so sometimes I don't see said invitation until after it's over.
Proper etiquette would also demand that anyone asking someone to come to an event, should give notice, send out invitations, etc. at least a week before it is planned. A lot of people I've come to notice don't do this, yet still expect people to come anyways.
A little off the original question you asked at the end I know, but I just thought it was worth saying.
